Aeronautical Telecomm Engineers
The School trains Aeronautical Telecommunication Maintenance Engineers/Technologists in the installation and maintenance of Communications, Nav-Aids and Surveillance systems used in the aviation industry.
Organisational Structure
ATE School is structured into 4 Departments, namely:
General Electronics and Computer Studies Department (GEC)
This department conducts standard Diplomas and Certificate Courses in Aeronautical Telecommunication Engineering and short duration courses in Computer related subjects. The department is also responsible for the maintenance of computer systems in the College.
Nav-Aids Equipment Maintenance Department (NAV)
The department conducts maintenance courses on VHF Omni-directional Radio Range (VOR) equipment, Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and Instrument Landing System (ILS) equipment used at the airports. The department now has the capability to run courses on the new Alcatel Navigation Equipment.
ATC Radar Equipment Maintenance Department (RAD)
This department conducts maintenance courses on various aspects of the ATC Radar equipment such as Radar Head equipment, Radar Display and Processor, Air Navigation Systems Management and Data Handling.
The Communications Equipment Maintenance Department (CEM)
This department conducts maintenance courses on various communication systems such as HF, VHF and UHF equipment. In line with the training needs of the industry, the department has introduced Satellite Communications and Antenna Systems Maintenance Courses. The department is also responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the telephone and fax systems in the College.
Evolution of Courses
RE-1 COURSE
Course delivery in the Aeronautical Telecommunication Engineering School (ATES) formerly Radio Maintenance School, started in 1967 with the 81weeks Aeronautical Radio Technician Diploma course referred to then as RE–1.
TTY COURSE
This was followed in 1968 by the Tele-printer (TTY) course TTY-1, a short course of three (3) months duration introduced to address the need to locally maintain tele-printers in the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) of the Federal Ministry of Transport at that time.
RM COURSE
The need to provide formal technical training for craftsmen already in service in CAD led to the introduction of the Basic Certificate course then called Radio Maintenance (RM) course, in 1970.
AET COURSE
The RE course metamorphosed into Aeronautical Electronics and Telecommunication (AET) course in 1973 when the name of the School changed to Aeronautical Electronics and Telecommunication School to reflect specialized areas of training programmes in Aeronautical Telecommunication.
BAET COURSES
In the same vein, the Basic Certificate Course (RM) became Basic-AET (BAET). The Aeronautical Electronics and Telecommunication course further evolved to become Aeronautical Telecommunication Engineering (ATE) in 1994 when its scope and depth were expanded.
ISB AND SSB
Similarly, in 1973, communication equipment courses that were introduced included the ISB and SSB. As activities in the aviation industry in the Country expanded in the 70’s, complex Navigation and Surveillance facilities/systems were installed. This change gave rise to the introduction of additional training programmes/courses in Navigation Aids Equipment Maintenance to facilitate effective performance and maintenance of these new systems. These courses include:
Very high frequency Omni directional range VOR
Distance Measuring Equipment DME
Instrument Landing Systems ILS
Non Directional Beacon NDB
Digital Techniques DGT
Solid State Application SSA
These courses followed the new trends in technological development in the industry.
ATC RADAR EQUIPMENT COURSES
The Radar Systems Maintenance Courses were introduced in 1978 with the installation of the Radar Equipment.

MANAGEMENT COURSES
The Air Navigation Systems Management (ANSM) Course was developed and introduced in year 2001 to address systems management needs arising from the operation and maintenance of the systems/facilities by field officers.
CNS/ATM CONCEPT/INTRODUCTION OF MODULAR COURSES
Presently, a new set of courses have been developed and also introduced to effectively lay the foundation for the implementation of the new Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) concept of future Air Navigation Systems.
The adoption of this CNS/ATM concept resulted in the introduction of modular short course delivery, which will lead to the licensing and certification of personnel charged with the responsibility of operating and maintaining Air Navigation Systems in Nigerian Airports.

Number of Students Graduated
The total number of students that have graduated from the School since inception is 1,309. The level of knowledge and skill attained on successful completion of the standard and specialized courses is in conformity with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices. Majority of these graduates have distinguished themselves in their careers. Courses available, duration and fees are advertised in the yearly training schedule. Products of the School also secure lucrative jobs in other electronics and telecommunications establishments in Nigeria and beyond.
Syllabi
The syllabi and course curricula are based on materials contained in the relevant ICAO training manuals, annexes and training needs of the industry which are currently being updated using the Systematized Course Planning method. New Courses such as Computer Maintenance, Satellite Communication, Antenna Systems and Communication Systems Maintenance have been added, while the traditional courses have been broken down into modules to suit the new CNS/ATM concept.
